David Roland Cook was born on December 20, 1982 in Houston, Texas, but was raised in Blue Springs, Missouri. He began playing guitar at the age of 2 and started singing in the second grade. He participated in almost all the Christmas and PTA programs. He joined the choir in middle school and by high school, graduated to full-on plays. He also loved playing on the baseball team in high school, but decided he liked doing music more. He earned a theater scholarship to the University of Central Missouri but gave up on theater after two semesters and decided to work on getting a degree in graphic design. He graduated in 2006 and said that receiving his degree was the proudest moment of his life.
David decided to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma to go after his musical dreams. He ended up becoming the lead singer and guitarist for Axium from 1999 to 2006. The band was named one of the top 15 independent bands in the country in the Got Milk independent band contest. After Axium broke up in 2006, he joined the Midwest Kings playing guitar, bass, and backup vocals. He mostly bartended to fund his solo album, Analog Heart. He designed the artwork for the album. The album won Urban Tulsa's Weekly "Absolute Best of Tulsa" award and fourth best CD by Music Equals Life.
David Cook auditioned for American Idol in late 2007 and made it to Hollywood. [For more information about the songs he performed, check out the American Idol page] David won over the judges and the audience with his incredible ability to transform songs into "breaths of fresh air" (as Simon Cowell put it). It was his "Billie Jean" rendition that made Cook the dark horse of the competition. David was never in the bottom three, as well as his competition, David Archuleta.
On May 21, 2008, David was declared the winner of American Idol, winning 56% of the votes.
